From Source to Sea: Place-Based Research and Policy Learning in the Umzimvubu River Catchment

Framed through a “Source to Sea” approach, the session examines how upstream and downstream dynamics within the Umzimvubu River system are addressed through sustained collaboration among researchers, municipalities, and civil society organisations. Drawing on applied research and technical reports produced by UCP partners, including, but not limited to, Conservation Exposure Education and Training (CEET), South Africa National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Environmental and Rural Solutions (ERS), Conservation Africa (CSA), Alfred Nzo District Municipality, and the UKZN NRF/SARChI Chair in Sustainable Rural Livelihoods, the proposed session will demonstrate how co-produced knowledge is informing Integrated Development Plans, rangeland restoration initiatives, and spring protection measures. Impact is assessed not through attribution, but through evidence of learning, institutional change, and continuity of engagement. The session will foreground the catchment as a living socio-ecological system, highlighting how practice-oriented research, community engagement, and institutional collaboration are mobilised across the upper and lower catchment to address challenges of water security, land degradation, rural livelihoods, and climate vulnerability. Conceptually grounded in place-based research, network governance, and institutional theory, the session illustrates how sustained relationships, trust, and learning platforms enable the translation of research into practice through transdisciplinary approaches that integrate scientific evidence, practitioner expertise, and local knowledge.
