The Centre for Global Change (CGC), founded in 2011 by the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF), addresses urgent global issues such as climate change, environmental changes, and geopolitical shifts. Founded as a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Centre at three universities, it has grown into a network of seven South African institutions that focus on risk, vulnerability, and adaptation to global environmental changes. The CGC promotes a transdisciplinary, community-engaged research approach that encourages innovation and long-term solutions in order to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Key goals include increasing local knowledge about climate risks, supporting municipal policies, training students, and strengthening science-society connections. The CGCs aim to create impactful interventions for improved community engagement.
