The African Union Theme of the Year (2026): Water Sustainability, Science and Innovation: Advancing Africa’s Green and Climate-Resilient Future

The AUDA-NEPAD and AUC panel discussion will focus on the 2026 Theme of the Year of the African Union: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” The theme highlights the critical importance of water security, sanitation, and sustainable environmental management for Africa’s long-term development as envisioned in Agenda 2063. The Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034) has five main priority sectors, namely: Health, Agriculture, ICT, Energy, and Climate/Environment. Being linked to the theme of the year, it is obvious to observe that across the continent, water resources are increasingly under pressure due to climate change, rapid population growth, and urbanization. Ensuring equitable access to water and safe sanitation systems is therefore fundamental to improving public health, strengthening food and energy security, and protecting ecosystems. This panel will provide a platform to reflect on how science, policy, and innovation can support the continent’s commitment to sustainable water governance while contributing to inclusive growth and environmental resilience. The discussion will also explore how continental science and innovation frameworks are contributing to this goal, particularly through STISA2034. STISA-2034 promotes the use of science, technology, and innovation to address Africa’s socio-economic challenges, including climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and water resource management. Complementary efforts such as the Science Advice Network initiatives led by AUDANEPAD, including SANWACE/SANWCTE, aim to strengthen the interface between scientific research and policy decision-making.
